Homicide squad investigators have spoken with a 62-year-old Endeavour Hills man in relation to the incident. He was released pending further enquiries.

Neira and the Endeavour Hills man were known to each other, police said.

“Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who may have further information about the circumstances leading up to the woman’s death,” the police spokeswoman said.

Neighbours said Neira had a sister in Chile with whom she spoke almost every night.

She had lived in Marna Court for seven years, and was beloved by neighbours for her kindness and constant offers of tea and sweets.

Suzanne described her as having a caring demeanour and a sense of fun.

“She was the softest, gentlest, kindest little lady,” Suzanne told Nine News.

“She was motivated, she always dressed impeccably, she loved nice things and she would get on the train and go into the city to the museums, to Moomba or the beach in summer and do it by herself.

“We had so many good times together. We went to teppanyaki, a Chilean restaurant. She was one of those people you were lucky to know.”

Friend and neighbour Ann said July was always there for her.

“She was my butterfly. She really was,” Ann said.

“She was there when I needed her. She was there if I didn’t need her and she would still ask if I was alright as she hadn’t seen me for a few days.

“She was the old-fashioned girl that you don’t get many of any more. Kind-hearted. Would do anything for you.”
