In a recent WWE Raw appearance, John Cena, continuing his heel turn, declared his intention to “ruin wrestling” as he intensified his rivalry with Cody Rhodes leading up to their WrestleMania 41 clash. It marked his second address to fans since embracing this villainous persona.
“I am going to ruin wrestling,” Cena said. “I am going to ruin wrestling for every fan, every wrestler, for everyone. At WrestleMania, I make history by winning a 17th championship, and finally force you forget the name of the fun machine, jet-flying, ‘woo’, Ric Flair. You will forever say the name John Cena.”
Cena, alluding to his pursuit of a 17th world title to surpass Ric Flair’s record, will challenge Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41, held in Las Vegas on April 19th and 20th. This match represents Cena’s opportunity to achieve his goal.
“But even worse, I am going to win that championship – the centre of every superstar in this entire business, of every fan in this building – and retire with it,” Cena continued. “I am taking it home with me, and leaving all of you to create a brand new ‘toy’ belt, because the real one comes home with me. I will be the last real champion in WWE.”

A major issue with Cena’s promo was his reliance on saying the same thing over and over again to the point where it started to become redunct. Sure last week, taking aim at the fans and putting the spotlight made sense.
It needed to do so as it would explain why he would turn his back on them. He was a longtime babyface for so long that despite all of the things that they did to him the reactions they gave him would justify him turning his back on them.
He went back to the well this week instead of explaining why he would align with The Rock and attack Rhodes as much as possible. Instead, he is still focusing on ruining wrestling for the fans instead of putting all of the weight on the promo by highlighting the fact that he has a chance to make history by breaking the 16-time World Title record that he’s tied with Flair for.
Cena has one more TV appearance before WrestleMania. I want him to explain the angle of aligning with The Rock and less about the wrestling fans. We’ve been there, done that. There’s too many layers to this story to focus on one side.
