Winds of up to 100km/h may sweep through western Victoria near the Grampians bushfire, as the Bureau of Meteorology issues a severe weather warning.
Peak gusts of about 90km/h in the Grampians and central ranges were expected in the morning, before easing by the early afternoon.
But 100km/h damaging winds are forecast from the early afternoon around broader parts of the Mallee, Wimmera and South West districts.
In the state’s south-west and Surf Coast, 90km/h winds are possible late this evening.
Areas that may be affected include Mildura, Horsham, Hamilton, Warrnambool, Portland, Maryborough, Kyneton, Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh.
The SES has advised people to avoid travel if possible and stay away from trees, fire-affected areas, windows and fallen power lines.
