If you’ve lived in Perth long enough, you’ve probably heard our dear city referred to as “Dullsville”.

Lonely Planet anointed our city with that disparaging tag back in 2000, but a perhaps more damning assessment had been delivered seven years prior, when renowned Danish architect and urban design consultant Jan Gehl concluded Perth had all the character of an oversized department store.

Yeesh. Yeah, well, like… at least we’ve got a decent food court, right?

Anyway, Gehl’s back. Or at least planners from his consultancy firm are. They’ve returned to Perth after three decades – and have largely hailed our refresh a success and declared we’ve shed our “Dullsville” reputation. About time.

So we’ve obviously heeded Gehl’s advice. Except in one area.

And in property news, Perth has dominated a national list of best-performing suburbs, taking out all top 10 spots for the strongest growth in house values.

But one suburb was a standout, with 45 per cent growth in median house values over the year.
