The Boston Celtics have been sold to a group led by Bill Chisholm for a record $6.1 billion. The sale of the Celtics has been coming down the pipeline for a while now and we now know who will be running the team going forward.

Boston Celtics Officially Have New Owner in Historic $6.1 Billion Sale

Wyc Grousbeck bought the Celtics back in 2002 for $360 million and now has made an incredible return on investment here. Many wondered why he would want to sell the Celtics now just as they are coming off a title win.

But the heavy price that it would take to keep the Celtics core together could play a factor. Maybe Grousbeck didn’t want to deal with the luxury tax penalties or maybe he just wanted a new opportunity to do something else.

No matter what direction, the Celtics are still currently one of the better teams in the NBA. They are the defending champions and should be one of the favorites to win it all again this year.

But this record sale could complicate things down the line. NBA fans reacted to the sale, offering thoughts on the moment.

Chisholm also released a statement about the decision to buy the team.

“Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life,” said Chisholm. “I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country. I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organization to the people of Boston, and I am up for this challenge.”

Chisholm will now be tasked with helping this Celtics franchise go after more NBA titles. It won’t be easy due to the luxury tax penalties that are in place under the new CBA restrictions.

But Boston has a reputation as a team that wins and Chisholm will need to make sure they stay winning. The Celtics are one of the two premier franchises in the NBA so keeping them at the top of the league is paramount to the success of this new ownership group.
