A man has been arrested over the stabbing death of a gifted rugby league player in front of his family on a busy inner west street.
Detectives on Wednesday arrested a 31-year-old man in relation to the death of Sitaleki Filihiahekava, who was stabbed on Marrickville Road at about 7.40pm on Monday. The man is assisting police with inquiries and no charges have been laid.

Police launched an urgent manhunt for Filihiahekava’s alleged killer after the popular rugby player was stabbed during a “brief encounter” with his attacker, who fled the scene.
Strike Force Nogales was launched to investigate the circumstances around his death.
Police and paramedics performed CPR on Filihiahekava, 32, but he could not be revived and died at the scene.

As police established a cordon after placing a sheet over Filihiahekava, a group of men rushed towards officers in an attempt to enter the crime scene.
“It’s my f—ing brother,” one man yelled as officers dragged him away.
Family, friends and teammates of Filihiahekava, who wore the number 10 for Mascot Juniors, have gathered at the scene of his death since Monday to pay tribute.
