A shelter dog has developed the most adorable of habits in an effort to try and get attention from any potential adopters
Chelsea Grey, a volunteer and foster parent at Detroit Animal Care and Control, shared heartbreaking footage of Eamon the dog picking up his “blankie” to show visitors.
Writing alongside the clip, Grey theorized that Eamon was likely putting on this cute performance in the hope someone would “give him a chance.”
“I saw him in his kennel with his blankie and thought he was so cute and it would maybe encourage someone to adopt him,” Grey told Newsweek. “He had been at the shelter 22 days which made him one of the longest residents.”
Though 22 days might not seem like very long, it’s a significant stay for a dog within the system at Detroit Animal Care and Control.
“The shelter is a municipal city shelter that takes in all strays found in Detroit,” she said. “They usually intake around 20 dogs per day which leads to the shelter being extremely overcrowded and as a result, they have to euthanize for space frequently.”
Newsweek contacted Detroit Animal Care and Control for comment.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates around 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized each year. That figure includes approximately 390,000 dogs. Though still a significant number, it represents a steep decline on the 2.6 million shelter animals euthanized in 2011.
Grey has seen too many good dogs become part of those statistics.
“I have lost many dogs that I loved at the shelter due to overcrowding and not being able to find adopters,” she said.
Grey was determined to ensure Eamon’s story ended differently so she created the video of him holding up his blankie.
“I wanted Eamon to have a better fate and make it out,” she said. “Has always been like that with his toys and blankies. All the volunteers noticed!”
They weren’t the only ones to notice either. At the time of writing, Grey’s video, posted under the handle chelseachapters, has been watched over 500,000 times with viewers left teary-eyed by Eamon’s story.
“How can someone walk past that sweet face with his blankie and not immediately bring him home!?,” one viewer asked.
“He said he’s ready to go,” another wrote with a third adding: “God please find this baby a forever home.”
One viewer simply wrote: “Someone go get this boy.”
And somebody did. According to Grey, in the social media whirlwind that followed her video something amazing happened: Eamon found a forever home.
“He is saved and safe in a foster-to-adopt home,” Grey said. “His new family has another dog they saved from the Detroit shelter so he’ll have a sibling!”
All Eamon wanted was a chance at a happy life. Thanks to Grey and TikTok’s animal loving community he’s gotten exactly that.
